Hiji Falls is one of many hidden treasures in the forests of Yanbaru in northern mainland Okinawa. Since the lack of people living in Yanbaru, the falls are covered in green forests and you can really feel the wildlife. Hiking shoes is recommended for this one.
The trail to the falls is about 1.5km from the entrance and cuts through the forest. Roughly halfway through is a suspension bridge over a valley going 17 meters down under the bridge. The falls itself are 26 meters and there are a few trails around the falls if you want to see more nature.
If it is starting to get late and you happen to have a tent with you, then you can visit the campground at the trailhead. You can for 2.000 yen get a place to set up your tent and access to picnic tables.
If you are going by car, take the expressway all the way north to Kyoda and get off. Continue north on route 58 to Okuma and turn right when you see a sign saying Hiji Falls. It will take you a little less than 2 hours to get there. If you are going by bus, take bus 111 from Naha Bus Terminal to Nago Bus terminal and switch to 67. Get off at “Okuma Beach Iriguchi”, and start walking inland along the road. It will take you roughly 3 hours to get there. Pictures: © Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau
